It is hoped that the students at the PLLCA will succeed in their learning and practice in nine years. For the first two years, they will focus on basic moral education, learning and practicing Guidelines for Being a Good Person, Accounts of Request and Response, Liaofan’s Four Lessons, Precepts for Novice Monks, and the Ten Virtuous Karmas Sutra. In this way, students will learn morality and virtues, the law of cause and effect, the basic precepts, and the Pure Land teachings.

Next, students will spend three years learning the five Pure Land sutras and one treatise. For the final four years, they will choose one text from the five Pure Land sutras and treatise, and concentrate on learning and practicing it. The sutras and treatise are

the Buddha Speaks of the Infinite Life Sutra of Adornment, Purity, Equality and Enlightenment of the Mahayana School (Infinite Life Sutra);

the Amitabha Sutra;

the Visualization Sutra;

the “Chapter of the Vows and Practices of Samantabhadra” from the Avatamsaka Sutra;

the “Chapter of the Perfect and Complete Realization of Mahasthamaprapta” from the Shurangama Sutra; and

the Rebirth Treatise.

For the rest of their lives, the students will delve deeply into this text and focus on practicing and propagating it.

Our study year is divided into quarters with each session being ten weeks. Six days a week, the students spend a minimum of six hours listening to lectures and four hours chanting the Infinite Life Sutra and the Buddha-name (“Amituofo”). In this way, both understanding and cultivation are emphasized.

Holding to the practice of not charging for teachings or Dharma materials, we do not charge for tuition or room and board. We do, however, require that students have good characters and be accomplished in their studies, understand as well as practice the teachings, and cultivate virtues.
